The movie In Harm’s Way with John Wayne(1), I’ve been watching that movie for a very long time, off and on, now and then. Here’s something I never thought about, ’til just a moment ago…

Really, just a moment ago.

In the movie John Wayne’s character is Captain Rockwell Torrey, known as “The Rock” or just “Rock.”

Here’s my realization: A navy guy … named Rock? Would you care to serve on a ship captained by a guy named after something that can not possibly float? Or that could rupture the bottom of a ship if the ship rubs up against (on a shoal, say)?

I’m reminded of the scene from Rocky III where Carl Weathers’ character asks Burt Young’s character, “Can he swim?” and is answered, “With a name like ‘Rock’?”

They might just as well have named John Wayne’s character “Anchor” or “Hull Breach.”

Why not Captain “Unsinkable?” Or Commander Life Preserver? Now that makes sense.

All these years… and it just occurred to me.

Sometimes I worry myself.

(1) The original was 1965, with John Wayne, Burgess Meredith, Kirk Douglas, bunches of other Stellar Stars. I haven’t yet braved the 2017 remake; when they remake a perfect movie, it almost never works out. I will admit, though, that the remake of Midway was truly excellent and worthy.
